Banked turns let athletes carry speed through the curve instead of fighting centripetal force on a flat surface, and oversized tracks have gentler curves and longer straights. NCAA data from thousands of collegiate results shows the same athlete runs measurably faster on banked/oversized facilities, so times from flat tracks are adjusted down (multiplied by a factor below 1) when converted to banked equivalents.

The published facility chart is for qualifying and seeding comparisons, not records, but this calculator does not certify a qualifying mark. It rounds half-up to a hundredth. In one observed TFRRS men’s mile flat-to-banked case, 5:00.40 returned 4:56.62 while this tool returned 4:56.61. Verify the official TFRRS conversion and the current division and meet requirements; do not infer every rounding rule from that one case.

From the NCAA Indoor Track Facility Indexing Conversion Summary, a study commissioned by the NCAA Track and Field Committees that analyzed five seasons of results from the same athletes on different track configurations. The formula-based factors took effect in 2012-13 and were updated in January 2024 to add events like the 500m, 600m, and 4x800.

The NCAA publishes separate regression-based factors for each direction, and they are intentionally not exact reciprocals. For example, the men's mile uses ×0.9874 going flat to banked but ×1.0128 coming back, and 0.9874 × 1.0128 = 1.00004 — so a round trip can land a hundredth off. Always convert directly from the track the time was actually run on.

A flat track is a standard 200m oval with no banking. Undersized tracks are shorter than 200m (common in fieldhouses). Banked tracks have raised turns, and oversized tracks are longer than 200m (often 300m); the NCAA treats banked and oversized as equivalent for conversion purposes because the data showed no qualifying-relevant difference.

No — the NCAA only publishes factors going toward flat and toward banked/oversized (undersized→flat, banked→flat, undersized→banked, flat→banked). There is no official flat→undersized or banked→undersized factor, because nobody needs to qualify 'down' to an undersized facility.
