How to Use
Select your race distance
Choose from common distances (5K, 10K, Half Marathon, etc.) or enter a custom distance.
Enter your finish time
Type your race time or goal time in MM:SS or H:MM:SS format.
View your pace
See your pace per 400m, per kilometer, and per mile all at once, plus your speed in mph and km/h.
How It Works
Pace = Total Time / (Distance / Pace Unit)
Example: 5K in 20:00
- Per 400m: 20:00 / 12.5 laps = 1:36
- Per km: 20:00 / 5 = 4:00
- Per mile: 20:00 / 3.1 = 6:27
Standard conversions: 1 mile = 1609.34m, 1 km = 1000m. Speed (mph/kph) is calculated as distance divided by time.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is running pace and why does it matter?
Running pace is the time it takes to cover a specific distance, usually expressed as minutes per mile or minutes per kilometer. Knowing your pace helps you train at the right intensity, plan race strategies, and track fitness improvements over time. It's the fundamental metric for runners of all levels.
How do I convert pace per mile to pace per kilometer?
To convert pace per mile to pace per kilometer, divide by 1.609 (or multiply by 0.621). For example, 8:00/mile = approximately 4:58/km. This calculator shows both simultaneously so you never need to convert manually.
What pace should I run for my 5K, 10K, or marathon?
Your race pace depends on your fitness level. A good starting point is to use a recent race result. Generally, your 10K pace is about 5-7% slower than your 5K pace, and marathon pace is about 15-20% slower than your 10K pace. Use our Distance Equivalency Calculator for precise predictions.
How do I find my pace per 400m for track workouts?
This calculator shows your pace per 400m automatically. For interval training, you might run slightly faster than race pace. For example, if your 5K race pace is 80 seconds per 400m, you might do 1000m repeats at 75-78 seconds per 400m.
What's the difference between pace and speed?
Pace is time per distance (e.g., 7:00 per mile), while speed is distance per time (e.g., 8.57 mph). Runners typically use pace because it's easier to track during runs. This calculator shows both pace and speed for your convenience.
