Because the legs are different distances run by different athletes, even pace is the wrong model — instead each leg is weighted for equal effort using the same Riegel exponent (1.06) behind common race-equivalency tools, so the 400m leg is targeted at the fastest pace per 400 and the 1600m leg the slowest. A 10:00.0 goal becomes about 3:00.8 for the 1200, 56.4 for the 400, 1:57.6 for the 800, and 4:05.2 for the 1600, with exchange checkpoints at 3:00.8, 3:57.2, and 5:54.8.

Because the legs are different distances run by different athletes. Even pace per 400 would ask the 400m leg to run miler pace and the 1600m leg to hold 400 pace. Weighting each leg by distance^1.06 targets every leg at roughly the same relative effort, which is how coaches actually assign DMR legs. Treat the defaults as a starting point and adjust for your personnel.

The NCAA publishes multiplicative DMR factors between track sizes: for men, flat 200m to banked/oversized is x0.9866 and banked to flat is x1.0136; for women, x0.9894 and x1.0107. The standard distance medley relay order is 1200m, 400m, 800m, then 1600m anchor — 4000m in total. The 1200 leadoff starts from a standing start; the effect on a roughly three-minute leg is small, so the model does not add a separate leadoff adjustment.
